As a severe winter storm and dangerously cold temperatures move into our area, an Emergency Warming Shelter is open to ensure neighbors have a safe, warm place during this critical time.
The shelter is located at The Salvation Army, 15 S. Plum Street, and will remain open 24 hours a day throughout the storm and cold snap.
This warming shelter is operated by the Nehemiah Faith Community Crisis Response Team, in partnership with The Salvation Army, and is available to anyone in need of warmth, safety, and basic support during extreme weather conditions.
Volunteers Are Welcome
Additional volunteers are needed to support shelter operations over the weekend and into next week. Even a two-hour shift can make a meaningful difference.
No prior orientation or training is required. Volunteers can assist with:
-
Serving meals
-
Organizing supplies
-
Cleaning shared spaces
-
Laundry for shelter guests
-
Providing general support alongside experienced shift leaders
If you are new, simply let the shift leader know when you arrive — guidance and support will be provided.
While walk-ins are welcome, volunteers are encouraged to use the SignUpGenius link (listed below) so organizers can plan coverage for each shift.
Donations and Meal Support Needed
The shelter is also seeking:
-
Supplies and financial donations to support ongoing operations
-
Meal support from local restaurants and churches
Community members or organizations interested in covering a meal are encouraged to reach out. Continued generosity helps ensure the shelter can remain open and responsive during this emergency.
